Holly, also ilex, is a genus of over 600 plant species in the Aquifoliaceae family. Found worldwide, mostly in subtropics, holly keeps its leaves year-round, making it attractive in winter gardens. It’s famous for its shiny, leathery leaves with characteristic spiky edges. Leaves can be various colours depending on the species and variety, from dark green to those with yellow or cream borders.
Holly is probably the most recognizable plant symbol of Christmas. During this time, branches with red berries are used in many decorations. Preserved holly is also widely used in Christmas arrangements. It’s great for making wreaths, garlands, centerpieces, and decorating Christmas presents.
